Israeli airstrike in Gaza kills 3 sons, as many grandchildren of Hamas leader Haniyeh

At least three sons and three grandchildren of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed in an Israeli air attack on a Gaza refugee camp, Al Jazeera reports.

Haniyeh told Al Jazeera that his children were visiting relatives for Eidul Fitr at the Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza when they were targeted.

The Hamas chief decried what he described as Israel’s brutality, but stressed that Palestinian leaders will not back down if their families and homes are targeted.

“There is no doubt that this criminal enemy is driven by the spirit of revenge and the spirit of murder and bloodshed, and it does not observe any standards or laws,” Haniyeh said, adding that 60 members of his family have been killed since the start of the conflict.

“We’ve seen it violate everything on the land of Gaza. There is a war of ethnic cleansing and genocide. There is mass displacement.”

Israeli army claims attack on Haniyeh’s children in Gaza

Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari has said fighter jets attacked “three military operatives” in central Gaza, referring to a car carrying Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s children, who were killed earlier today, Al Jazeera reports.

The Israeli army “confirms” that they are “the children of Ismail Haniyeh”, Hagari said.

video, verified by Al Jazeera and circulating on social media, shows the moment Haniyeh received the news of the killing of his children and grandchildren.

The Hamas leader was visiting wounded Palestinians who were evacuated from Gaza to receive treatment at a hospital in Doha, Qatar. He appeared to repeat a phrase used in final farewells: “May God ease their path.”

Car with Haniyeh’s sons was bombed in Gaza’s Al-Shati camp: Hamas

Three sons of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh have been killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian group and Haniyeh’s family said, according to Reuters.

The Israeli military said it was checking the report.

Haniyeh has been the tough-talking face of Hamas’ international diplomacy as Israel’s military operation has raged on in Gaza, where his family home was destroyed in an Israeli airstrike back in November.

The three sons — Hazem, Amir and Mohammad — were killed after the car they were driving in was bombed in Gaza’s Al-Shati camp, Hamas said. Three of Haniyeh’s grandchildren were also killed in the attack, Hamas media said.

The three sons and three grandchildren were making family visits during the first day of Eidul Fitr in Shati, their home refugee camp in Gaza City, according to relatives.

Hamas’ Haniyeh confirms killing of 3 sons, grandchildren in Israeli attack in Gaza City

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Hamas top leader Ismail Haniyeh confirmed the killing of his sons, identifying them as Hazem, Amir and Mohammad.

He also said a number of his grandchildren were also killed in the Israeli attack, joining dozens of his relatives who have been killed in the conflict so far.

“Through the blood of the martyrs and the pain of the injured, we create hope, we create the future, we create independence and freedom for our people and our nation,” the Hamas leader said.

According to Al Jazeera, the attack targeting Haniyeh’s sons and their children took place on the Shati refugee camp, northwest of Gaza City.

Global, regional powers must force Hamas to accept proposed truce deal: Israel’s Gantz

Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz has said it is “time to exercise all forms of pressure on Hamas” so the group accepts a US-led ceasefire push and releases all Israeli captives, Al Jazeera reports.

“Apart from the military pressure, the political and diplomatic pressure is imperative, which I addressed with the US and other regional states,” he said.

“Hamas leaders must know that in addition to the military cost, they will be forced by global and regional states to pay a higher price if they undermine the proposal currently on the table,” Gantz added.
